Two coins from the island of Thasos in Thrace

A silver drachm struck in the archaic period (510-490 BC) showing a naked ithyphallic satyr carrying a struggling nymph. A quadripartite square, incuse, is on the reverse in the "swastika" style. Ref: BMC 3.12; SG 1358 Vol 1; Grose 4200.

A silver Stater - again from the island of Thasos in Thrace, bearing a similar obverse and reverse. Ref: BMC 3.5; SG 1357, Vol 1.

PAMPHYLIA, City of Aspendos, Silver Stater struck between 370-330 B.C. It weighs 10.7 gms and is about 25 mm/diameter. Reference SG 5390. Aspendos was an important port and naval base - though located 8 miles from the mouth of the Eurymedon river. The populace seemed to prefer Persian rule despite its Greek origins & even offered resistance to Alexander on his advance through Asia Minor. Two wrestlers are pictured with the reverse depicting a slinger about to discharge his weapon. A triskeles is shown to the right.
