COINS OF ROMAN EGYPT
The intention here is to provide an overview sense of Roman coins struck in Egypt. None of the coins here are available for sale. Since they do illustrate imperial and religious themes utilizing the changing artistic values of the periods covered, I consider these to be among the most fascinating issues of the Empire. The few examples shown here are not representative of the whole series ... they are - to me - of highest interest.
The long reign of the Ptolemies in Egypt came to an end with the defeat in battle of Marc Antony and Cleopatra. Octavian - later styled Augustus inherited the rich lands of Egypt as his own personal province - and so it remained the property of the reigning emperor spanning Roman history for over 300 years. An excellent summary of coin types and of the period can be found in Wayne Sayles book "Ancient Coin Collecting" , Krause Publ. Iola, WI, 1996. (Find it in our Bookstore)
If you have images of coins of Roman Egypt that you feel would be useful to others interested in this period please let us know!

Another rarely seen coin of this empress, once a Vestal Virgin, then married to Elagabalus in 220 A.D. In March of 222 A.D., Elagabalus and his mother Julia Soaemias were murdered in the praetorian camp. Their bodies were dragged through the streets of Rome and thrown into the Tiber. |
